Michelle
Obama’s speech was very inspirational. She is obviously very good at appealing
to the audience. Her speech was definitely to help Obama’s image and campaign.
She made a lot of points of how Obama and his family all were raised with real
values and have all faced struggles and that’s what made Obama the person he is
today. He is concerned about the people of America and he will do the right
thing. What she had to say was very interesting and inspirational, I think that
this will help the speech and might have a part in determining the election.
9/7/12
During the
Obama’s speech he addressed many interesting points. Obama had strong arguments
against his opponent. Obama argues that his opponent would not be the best
future for America. He promises no Tax cuts and more jobs for Americans. Obama
is a family man and he believes if you fight for your country you shouldn’t
have to fight for a job. The crowd seemed to react well with him and he
appealed to Americans.

The dilemma
that related to me the most in the “Shouting Fire” documentary was the story
about the High School student named Chase Harper who was restricted from
advocating his free speech in school. He decided to voice his opinions through
a t-shirt on national gay day at his high school (The Day of Silence). Chase
was a Christian who believed that you were condemned if you were a homosexual.
On the front of his shirt he wrote “be ashamed our school has embraced what god
has condemned” and on the back he wrote “Homosexuality is shameful”. He was
sent to the principal’s office and the principle said to him “if your religion
is offensive, leave it in the car.” the school was not only violated the
students freedom of speech but also his freedom of religion. I think that this
dilemma related to me the most because it affects me personally. It shows me that the first
amendment applies because I cannot voice my freedom of speech or religion in
school if it is offensive to others. What shocked me the most was that chase
lost the case and the school ruled it as hate speech. If this happened before
it could happen in our own school. I’m not particularly saying that I agree
with chase’s religious views but I don’t believe that he should have been
censored. A point was made in the video that if someone else wore a shirt
saying “Homosexuality is good” the person would not have been censored like
chase was.
Obama care
Obama care
is a very controversial subject. I personally don’t agree that we should have
to be forced to buy Obama care. It is against our amendment rights to have to
force citizens to buy something. The reason Obama care is penalizing citizens
if they do not purchase the care is to even out the plane field. Because before
Obama care American citizens were not required to purchase healthcare,
therefore if they needed medical assistance and did not have health care then
the burden of the costs fall onto the people who purchased health care. I
understand the logic behind giving everyone an equal cost but I don’t believe
in forcing people when this is a “free” country.
Presidential
debate
The Presidential
debate was a bit disappointing. I feel like Barack Obama did not do his best in
the debate. He did not seem defensive and Romney was obviously the winner of
the debate. There were a lot of things that Romney said that could have easily
been debated by Obama and was not. I consider this political theater instead of
a substantive debate because they were just trying to outmatch each other which
were entertaining. Overall it was a disappointing debate and I hope that Obama
does better next time.
Women’s
Rights
I do not
personally agree with mitt Romney’s views on women’s rights. I don’t believe
that woman’s birth control should be illegal for several reasons. Women should
have a say in their own birth control and I don’t believe that a man should be
the one to be in charge of that. If women want to use contraceptives then it
should be their right. In certain circumstances in a woman’s life it is not
right for them to have a child and that is when abortion should be considered.
It should be a personal choice. If contraceptives are not available then there
is more chance of getting pregnant and there are more cases of women wanting to
get abortions.. it doesn’t make sense. Therefore I think it should just be up
to women to make that decision.
Hazelwood Vs
Kuhlmeier
The summary
of this story was that the school Hazelwood was trying to censorship students.
The school won the ruling and saw it appropriate to sensor students and the
first amendment rights did not necessarily apply to students in school. This
case is very relevant to me as a student because it applies directly.
Apparently when I’m in school my first amendment rights are stripped away and I
am not necessarily considered a free person. I understand why there should be
some restrictions to these rights as students because we are forced to be in
school and our rights could be offensive and make others uncomfortable because
their forced to be here also.. Like in the case of expressing your freedom of
speech by advocating against gay rights. That was very offensive even though it
is your freedom of speech.
1st
Amendment Article
I found an
article on the state commissioners in the Durango herald where they voiced
their own opinions. This article was an example of freedom of speech because
they had the right to voice their own opinions on the candidates. the writer
talked about how our current state commissioner Kelly Hotter should be re-elected
because she’s smart, hardworking, experienced and energetic. It is the writers
right to have these opinions and to express them to the public.
Innocence of
Muslims:
The article
that I researched on the video “innocence of Muslims” spoke a lot about the
facts, events, and reactions that took place after the film was released. In
the article it explains the reaction that the Muslim people had on the video.
The video was very offensive to the Muslim religion because it was made very
poorly and it represented their sacred symbol Mohammad. After the film was
released riots and protests broke through and the US ambassador was
assassinated by the Islam people on the anniversary of 9/11.
